Montana Vs. Scout Camp

The boys all headed to Scout Camp while the girls headed to Montana. There was much debate over where the girls were going on our girls trip. The boys vetoed just about everything we thought up. Apparently they don't think of scout camp as much of an exotic vacation. I don't know why learning how to drain a flipped canoe and climb back into it out of frigid water isn't as cool as a cruise to Mexico...We ended up settling on Montana with cousin Lydia. We had an amazing time and didn't make the boys too jealous with our destination.
Ty does in fact have his fishing gear stored in the top of his hat. This boy is prepared for anything.

Mess hall cafeteria style food. They said it was edible.
Swim check. Cold lake but ambitious kids.
Working on their Scouting Skills! They get a lot of work done and earn tons of merit badges!

They call this stirring the Honey Bucket.....what? why?

Opal Mining - we found some!!!

Willing this candle to light...didn't work.

Montana Trip

Monday July 6 SLC-Idaho, fireworks, license plate game, wedding dress shopping with Amanda,

Tues July 7 Opportunity Sign, drive to Montana, Opal mining, pretty drive, glad to arrive, popcorn in the lobby, swimming in pool, Comfort Inn Big Sky, Thai Food, Ice Cream at Sweet Peaks. more swimming in the pool, Nice guys lent us their blower for our intertube, showers, snacks in the lobby, popcorn in the lobby- ukulele on the bed at night

Wednesday July 8 - House looking day today. Early meeting at 9:30. Met an agent at 785 Lower Valley Road in Kalispell. The property was pretty amazing, the house, not so much. It does come with a bonus chapel so, if we need a quick wedding we are set. The list price is 1.2million but they said there was a little wiggle room as the couple is impatient. I think the house has been on and off the market for at least five years it sounds like. It has been listed for as high as 2.2 million and is at it’s lowest at 1.2 million. The property appraised at some point for $750,000. I love the location, it has a pond, it is river front and has a tiny beach. Has a gazebo, swings, pasture that is fenced in, a greenhouse, and plenty of great space as it’s on ten acres. The home itself is dated and needs a big redo. It also has a blue metal roof. Like a royal blue color, well the blue is on all the buildings and in every room throughout. I guess blue was their color.
The realtor brought a builder with her and he thought a redo on the main floor was possible. We could pull out the fireplace that is sitting right in the middle of the main floor area; open it up and modernize it. The problem is we wouldn’t have ANY money left if we bought this house. It has blonde maple throughout and the carpets all need to be replaced. Not to mention the property is huge and would take tons of work to keep up with. I think we could find a place that is already modernized for much cheaper.
We then hit the beach and checked out the Whitefish Lake State Park area. It was a gorgeous lake and the girls had a great time splashing in the water, floating on the tube and digging clay out of the lake bed. The ice cream lady came by playing her mechanical tune in her hot pink ice cream truck and the girls enjoyed an ice cream cone. I enjoyed reading my book up on the grass.
Our next appointment rolled around quickly and we went touring through a country home and a city home. We joked about the country mice and the city mice fable. Problem is I just can’t figure out what kind of mouse I am. The city home was close to the schools, very close actually the kids could all walk except Tyler. He would have to bike into school. The High School and the elementary would be a block away. They HS and Middle School get great ratings up in Whitefish. Better than down in Kalispell. Columbia Falls HS gets terrible ratings. According to testing it goes Whitefish highest, Kalispell medium, Columbia Falls dead last. The city home was well, dated. Seems to be a theme around here. It was on a .4 acre parcel but it felt pretty small as the house was set back nearly to the back of the property. There is a wide open field in the back of the house right now, farm land, but that could be sold off and parceled out into home lots in the future. I guess at that point we could buy a couple and expand the yard but for now it’s a tiny backyard with a great and spacious field behind it. The house had four bedrooms, but barely. They count a room which opens into the garage and you would pass through to come in and out of the house as a bedroom. I would consider it a study as it is clearly a walk through room. So it is really a three room house. Listed for $525,000. I was not impressed but I really did like the neighborhood it was in. The address was 1019 Creek View Rd or Dr.
The country house was on 5 acres, felt really big compared to the other lot. It is down a dirt road, long dirt road that we would have to pay to have plowed out in the winter. Has a fenced in pasture. Cool bonus room above the garage. It has closets and a bathroom, it’s furnished with sofas and a desk/computer table. Could make a fun game room for the boys. No air conditioning in either of the houses in Whitefish. What, no AC? Crazy right? They do have venting for the heater so for a quick $4500 you can have AC added. The country house had a bit more open feel to it but it had segregated dining room and entry/living room area that is not connected to anything. The Home Teaching room as we call it in Utah. I don’t really care for all the little separate spaces I think it’s wasted space. The house also had an island to eat at, a kitchen table to eat at, the dining room to eat in and the deck to eat on…..that is far to much space wasted on eating rooms if you ask me.
Anyhow, between the three properties I would not buy any of them but I did get a good idea of what is available in the area….dated was the theme of today. I hope to meet with a builder and see a new home. That might cheer me up a bit. So tired….I had a splitting headache after playing at Big Mountain, we rode the lift up and back down and explored the ski resort a bit. I unfortunately forgot my tylenol and  the gift shop had closed. I think I didn’t drink enough water today while at the Lake. I must be dehydrated or something.
The girls have had a fun day, lake swimming, resort playing (Big Mountain lift ride spotted the ropes course), swimming pool for at least two hours tonight. They got McDonald’s chicken nugget happy meals for dinner. I ate leftover Thai food and we chilled at the hotel. They also got to run down for snacks out of the vending machine. It’s amazing what makes them happy. Funny girls.

Thursday- Had to get up early enough to eat the hotel breakfast so we set an alarm for 8:30 but we were already up by then. The girls are loving a bit of independence and went down to breakfast without me. They took a key with them which they think is awesome too, anytime they can take a key and go out on their own they are happy. We prepped for Glacier and got a few snacks together. The roads were under construction and I called a guy Chris Pickering to see if he could show us a new home build he is working on. He called me back just as we were heading gin the wrong direction but I figured we needed to swing around and go meet the guy. Off to Big Fork we went, it’s on the northeast side of the Flathead Lake. He was working on a house in a development there. Nice home, lots of beam work and the place looks like it is going to be gorgeous. Chris is a nice guys, seems like he would be easy to work with and flexible. He drove us over to show us a property his brother is building right now as well. It is situated Lake front and is also a really cool house. The lot next to it is for sale and I wouldn’t hesitate to grab it up. Seriously looks like a perfect setting though Big Fork is a bit out of the way. The girls were definitely getting bored of the home looking stuff but they were good sports. They like to hide under the inter tube in the back of the car whenever they got the chance. It was like a little fort in the trunk. I like Chris, he seems like he could help us find a perfect lot and knows what he is doing. He said he could design us a custom floor plan to fit whatever lot we decide on. I’m sold.

We headed off for Glacier. We missed the traffic taking a different highway north. Found a Huckleberry Store and stocked up for the boys. Couple T-shirts, Huckleberry jam and honey, etc. We were hungry and it was already past lunchtime so we grabbed a burger at the Huckleberry store, plus a huckleberry milkshake. The milkshake was great! The girls had a giggle over the Michael Jackson life-size poster. They asked who the girl was and I told them it was Michael Jackson- it took some convincing for them to believe me. Can’t say as I blame them, he did look like a girl for a while there.
We made it into Glacier Park and had to buy a new year pass as I left mine in my car. We will have two for Jackson this year which may not be a bad thing. Seems like we always need more while we are in the park. We got about ten miles into the park and found the McDonald Lodge. The girls were itching to get into another Lake and play.  They had so much fun in Whitefish Lake they wanted another shot at a Lake. They changed into their swimsuits in the car and we  dragged the intertube through the lobby of the hotel down to the dock. The girls played for a solid three hours. It is astonishing how much they love to play in water. They chased the minnows around and found a grocery bag and tried to net them. They eventually found a fishing lure and begged some line off the guy selling boat tickets. Tied their lure onto a stick but never did catch anything. These fish are savey. We rented a row boat and rowed out on the McDonald Lake for about forty-five minutes. Both girls got a shot at navigating the oars. They did alright. They were really heavy oars. We eventually got to hot and paddled back in. I sat and read the book “A Wrinkle in Time” I almost have it finished, but not quite. I got a good chunk of it read waiting on the girls. I eventually decided they would never finish up on their own so I made them dry off and get out so we could see some more of Glacier National Park. We packed up our stuff and slowly drove through the parking lot checking license plates. We have 35 of the 50 states found now. Getting pretty close. We enjoyed the cute Red Bus Tours with their old fashioned bus look to them. They add a nice touch to the park atmosphere. I guess you can buy a ticket with the red bus tour and they will drive you through the park and give you information while going along. We drove ourselves.
We made it to the Avalanche Waterfalls before turning off again. We hiked the Cedar Trail and enjoyed the beautiful tree trunks of the large trees in the forest. The walkway started out with much the same feel as the Bamboo forest in HI. I knew I was going to like the hike right off. When we got to the point where you keep on the Cedar Trail loop or head up to the Avalanche Lake the girls picked the two mile hike to the lake. Much to my surprsise. They wanted more time in a Lake! So we did a bit of hiking. There is a portion of this hike where the river has cut into some rock and created the most gorgeous slot canyon waterfall I have ever seen. The water is a turquoise blue color and the rocks are red and the effect of the water flowing along the silky smooth rock canyon is mesmerizing.
It was fairly strenuous and mostly uphill but the lake at the top was gorgeous. Since the girls both still had their suit son they stripped off their shoes and pants and headed right in the water. Another hour of lake play went on. I unfortunately did not have a book with me this time so I chatted it up with a mother from Uganda who had moved to Montana. They are loving it in Montana.
The Lake has three beautiful waterfalls cascading from hundreds of feet above straight down into the far side of the shore. It seems the glaciers are melting, rapidly. The waterfalls had pretty good flow. They did say it was a really hot week up here. I eventually dragged the girls out of the Lake and we started our descent. It was already after five by the time we got back to the car. We are barely even fifteen miles into the park at this point. We really had to increase our touring rate if we were going to see any of the Road To The Sun at all. We started booking it and were able to see some gorgeous waterfalls, the Weeping Wall. Jackson’s glacier, a mountain goat while the girls were still awake and an entire herd of about twenty goats after they had fallen asleep on the ride back down. We pulled off and spent some time looking at a glacier that was on the side of the road. I am shocked at how fast it is melting. It may not make it through the end of this summer at the rate it was dripping. We were starving and it was getting on past 9:00. I was hoping with all my hope there would be a restaurant open when we got to the next lodge which was on Lake Mary but not yet to the Lake Mary’s Lodge at the East Entrance.  Thankfully they are open until 10:00 so we stopped and the girls ate butterlfy pasta with meatballs and red sauce, I had a Northern Bean Soup and a salad with huckleberry vinaigrette dressing. We were so very grateful for our dinner at 9:10. The girls went to the gift shop and picked out a snugly stuffed animal. Ally got a Bear and Lydia bought a Beaver. The guy working told us he had just closed his till for the night and they would be open again at 6:30am. Well, all the good that would do us. We were saying good-bye to their stuffed friends when another worker came over and said he hadn’t signed out yet for the evening and could check us out. The girls were thrilled and quickly made their purchases. Saved by the back-up worker!
The girls were wiped out and fell asleep within thirty seconds of me heading west to get back to Kalispell. I enjoyed a beautiful, not a good enough word, magnificent sunset on my drive back down the Road to the Sun. The mountain peaks seemed to go on forever and the sky glowed pinks and purples with the blue hilltops fading off into the distance. Glorious. I nearly ran over the entire herd of mountain goats. That would have been bad. Followed along slowly behind them for a hundred yards before they decided to peel off the road and head up the hillside. The drive out went by much more quickly than the drive in. I was excited for it to get good and dark so I could watch for the Northern Lights while driving back to the hotel. Unfortunately it didn’t get really dark until almost midnight. We are way up north!!! Around midnight I pulled off to the side of the road, opened the sunroof and just looked up at the night sky. So many stars were out and when cars weren’t passing by it was good and dark. I did get to see a few faint swishes of the northern lights but not quite what I had been hoping for. It was thrilling to see the faint lights but you really had to try hard to see them. Ally eventually woke and joined me for the light show. She wasn’t able to make out the few faint swirls through the tall pine trees. With much begging that we get back on the road we headed off again. I stopped again out on a county road where there was no blockage from any trees and tried to see the lights again but there was light pollution from Whitefish and it made it to hard to see any from that point. I’m a bit disappointed as I wanted a really awesome showing but just got a few little blips that Ally couldn’t even make out at all. Dang it.
The girls hardly remember walking from the car into the hotel after 12:30. They were both so tired and quickly fell to sleep.

Friday- The girls kept talking about this Ropes Course up at Whitefish Big Mountain Ski Resort. I wanted to go see something new and different but they would not be deterred so I gave in. The girls were up super early and I was still soundly sleeping, or would have been, so I had them go down to breakfast. They ate quickly, darn and returned to the room. They both needed to shower since they didn’t wash the Avalanche Lake mud off of them last night. They took a bath together in their swimsuits while I went down for breakfast. Then we packed up out stuff and said goodbye to our Comfort Inn Big Sky with the adjoining casino, that was a  surprise Black Angus Casino shared our parking lot though we didn’t hardly notice.
The girls were careful to keep their swimsuits handy in case we came across any Lakes they could jump in while we traveled. The ropes course was fantastic. They had four different levels. The girls and I did the yellow, green, and blue courses. The elements were tricky enough to be hard and hard enough to be scary but not to overwhelming. The scariest on for me was the trapeze where you hang from a  trapeze and slide to the next pole. Luckily I was able to hang on long enough to make it across. Lydia and Ally were both really brave and confronted each new challenge with excitement and confidence. I was proud of them both! We were all supportive of each other and very encouraging. They even helped a boy who was stuck on a zip-line and showed real compassion for his fears which they fully understood as we had all just confronted our own.
The girls outlasted me on the ropes course. They ran one extra course through. My sugar was low and I was starting to feel shaky so I pulled out after forty five minutes. They had enough time to go one more time around on the yellow though without me. Lydia was starving but Ally really wanted to go once more so she was nice and quickly agreed to go again.
Lunch was alright, it filled us up at least. I got a BLT and the girls had chicken fingers, again. It seems these girls like chicken.
We loaded up the car and headed for Idaho, our fun times in Montana were done. Well, we though they were at least. Montana is a very large state and it too forever to get back down to Idaho. The girls laughed the entire way taking good care of their new stuffed animal babies purchased last night. They also talked on their “cell phones” they bought at the gas station we filled up at just after leaving Whitefish. I made a couple wrong turns but we got home just the same. McDonald’s was our restaurant of choice again on our drive down. The girls got chicken nuggets and I had an Asian salad. The giggling was getting out of control on our drive into Rexburg. It’s good we were almost home Lydia was staring to loose her voice. Fun times.

D.C. Trip 2015 -

Monday, June 29: Our plane scheduled to leave at 11:50 took off around half past midnight. We were all happy to try and settle in for a red-eye sleep. Ally was the most successful and knocked out quickly. Tyler  did pretty well too, a bit of tossing around but after he settled in on my lap next to Ally he was pretty sound asleep. Carter says he sat there with his eyes closed but didn’t do much sleeping. I tried but failed miserably in the sleeping department. It was a long hard flight to FLorida. Layover was long, 3 hours. We ate breakfast and looked around for a bit then found a TV playing Scooby-do. The flight to DC was thankfully shorter and we were so glad to land.
We found our luggage and our rental car and were very quickly lost in D.C. I could not get my phone map to get us to Arlington Cemetery. We were going around and around and running into a military base and it kept telling us to drive through it but we couldn’t. I was finally able get Carter behind the mapping and he was able to get us there.
The walk through Arlington Cemetery was special. The kids did a good job being quiet and listening to the little I know about Arlington Cemetery. Luckily I had been watching American Ride and had learned or re-learned that the home in the cemetery was General Robert E. Lee’s estate and as an insult the Union started burying their dead soldiers on his property during the war. After the war Lee’s son sewed to get the property back and he won. He then sold it back to the U.S. and they turned it into a burial ground for soldiers from both sides of the war and it has evolved into what it is today. I learned they buried people from the Twin Towers attack there and some police men who were recently killed in the line of duty. It really is a very sacred and special place.
We watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the unknown soldier. It is a privilege to be able to witness an event like that. The kids really thought it was neat. Carter noticed the ground where they stand had been worn down from the soldiers standing in the same place for so many years.
Quickly or more like for two hours we stopped at Hollie’s home to see this new baby Walker and drop off little presents. He is a dream boat baby. Lots of dark hair and the cutest little puckery lips you have ever seen. Such a sweet boy. Ty bought him a cute teddy bear and designed an Ewok costume for the bear to wear. We have decided Walkers nickname must be Ewok, Ally thought it up. Tyler proudly presented his gift and it was gladly received. He even hand stitched with leather string around parts of the costume to give a more authentic appearance. He really did a good job on it. Sadie got a cute jaguar Beanie-Bo that Ally picked out and Jozika got a red sports car he is in love with. I crocheted a blanket for baby Walker which I think turned out darling. Fun times visiting with our “excited” cousin Sadie. She has been bursting on Skype when we have talked with them lately before the trip with excitedness. Parting is such sweet sorrow when you have so recently been reunited but we headed off to Jake’s to visit with the other cute cousins.
Heading out of Arlington and towards Leesburg was another adventure. I forgot how expensive the tolls were and five bucks later we made it off the freeway. Jake’s crew were all sorts of riled up when we got there. Marie had her four plus her brothers three girls at the house still. That was a lot of little excited people.
A family trip to the pool for family home evening had been prescheduled but Rob wasn’t able to pick up his girls due to car troubles so we were going to split up and conquer when Hillary his wife made it over to get the girls. The four boys were so excited to show us their neighborhood pool where they have swim team. The water was a frigid temperature or maybe it just wasn’t very warm outside but I was not so excited to climb into it. The kids didn’t mind. Well, Jake did have to toss in Tommy since he wanted to swim but wouldn’t jump in. Greg was a little leach on Jake’a back and hung on for dear life while Jake wrestled with all the other kids. Will was happy to hang with Mare and I in the shallow pool, or the hot tub as I called it. It was at least ten degrees warmer than the big pool.
We were exhausted when we got home but the adults stayed up chatting into the night until I could not longer keep my eyelids open. It is so nice to spend time with my little brother! I just love that kid.

Tuesday June 30 - Morning came quickly but a good nights sleep does one a lot of good. We quickly got ready, as there were already seven kids in the house plus my three which adds up to a lot of children. Cold cereal and departure at 9:00 when Marie’s kids head off to swim team. We were off to Monticello. We stocked up on fruit, gatorades, snacks and sunblock at the local Giant. The drive to Monticello was gorgeous. Lush green expanses of gorgeous lawns with white country houses. Tall old forested roadways arching over the top of our car stories above us. It is something we just don’t have in Utah. The beauty of the Virginia countryside is something special. I also love the air when it is thick and opaque. It looks like you could cut it or suck it up in your vacuum it is so thick. The drive felt long, very long. The kids got along well though and took naps while we cruised along at a slow 60 mph.
Monticello took forty years to complete. Jefferson was his own architect and designed the entire structure. It also was remodeled during the forty years. My favorite element is his private wing with a library, a aviary/green house an office and his bedroom. He even used the space in the rafters to store his off season clothing. He lived there with 26 of his closest relatives but not his wife Martha for long as she bore him six children and died in their tenth year of marriage. I believe only two of those children lived to adulthood. Lively Jefferson did take up with Sally Hemings later in his life though so he wasn’t always lonely. She bore him a few children as well though he couldn’t claim them during those times.
The kids enjoyed the tour but I think the liked the gift shop the best. Jefferson is said to have said, “I can’t live without books.” Carter took to that quote and was on a mission to find it on something he could bring home with him. We got it down from a $125 dollar wooden sign to a $8.00 small wooden plaque. He was thrilled with the decreased price.
Tyler was very enthralled with the pocket watches. He found a nice one with a coin inlay. He has not been separated from it since his $30. purchase took place. He says he is now collecting pocket watches and has been checking all the gift shops for another one. Ally found a stretch frog and has had frog obsession the entire trip. That girl gets something stuck in her head and it won’t leave. She has been looking in every soggy spot to check for frogs.
Spotting Carter Mountain Orchard on our way up to Monticello was thrilling for me. I made the kids jump out of the car for a photo with the sign. We spent time there when the boys were younger picking apples and have fond memories. On our drive out of Monticello we drove to the orchard to do some pick your own peaches but they had already cleared their trees so we just bought a few peaches, and apple donuts, and apple cider slushies and a t-shirt for Carter. Byron called later to tell me the credit card had been put on hold. (oops) Amex really doesn’t like it when we travel. It pretty much puts a hold on our card once a month, though last month there really were fraudulent charges so good for them and good for us.
We found a little pizza in Madison on our drive home. The restaurant was called “Pie in the Sky” and was just before a turnoff to Shenandoah Skyline Drive. Oh how that road was calling my name but alas, we needed to get back and play with Jake and his kids a bit more. We did stop in the antique store next to the pizza place and Carter found a few glass figurines to take home with him. A set of owls, and an elephant were his exciting purchases. He purchased the owls first and after much deliberation and vexing he returned before they closed to get the elephant. He has a great little collection of glass pieces put together from all his travels.
Interesting bits about Jefferson-he was a thorough journal keeper, he tracked the weather, temperature and all of his purchases daily. He wrote down every book he ever bought and he was a great collector of books. When the library held in the capitol burned down in 1812 he sold the US his entire library so his nation would have a collection of books. He was also heavily in debt so the money probably didn’t hurt. He died severely in debt and his grandson had to sell off everything. They had a large estate sale on the front lawn to try to pay down debts he owed. They even had to sell Monticello to try to clear debts. Jefferson was the architect and founder for the University of Virginia located there in Charlottesville. We tried to drive through the old historic district of Charlottesville but I never could really find it following their little street plaque signs pointing toward it. I finally gave up deciding we had a long drive ahead of us and I was the only one interested in seeing more cute little old houses.  More about Jefferson….oh this isn’t about Jefferson but funny I think. Ty took to calling Thomas Jefferson old TJ. TJ did this, TJ said that. On our bus ride down from the property we decided Thomas Jefferson and Carter had a lot in common: (avid readers, scientifically minded, inventors, thinkers, observers, etc.)  so we should call Carter CJ from now on. Tyler pipes in and says yes like “Carter Jesserson.” This is a crackup if you know Carter’s middle name is Jess. So CJ is it.
Somehow I managed to drive us all home without falling asleep. I was so exhausted from our no sleep on our flight to VA. I think we were blessed on our drive home as when we got to one of our turn offs to head closer to Leesburg we were circling around the roundabout and our road was entirely closed. Two police cards were blocking the entrance. I went nice and slow trying to think of what to do and noticed the policeman was starting to pull up his barrier. I circled around the roundabout again and thankfully timing was good as the police were loading to pull away. I slide my car over to the right and waited for them to open the road again.  About a mile down the road a giant tree had fallen and blocked passage since we had come down it that morning. I guess it happens with all the gorgeous old trees about but I have never seen a road closed due to a tree over path. I am so grateful and feel very blessed that our timing was just so. A major delay or re-routing of our path would have really thrown me. I was very tired at this point and just wanted to get back to shelter and a bed.
Of course Jake and Marie and I stayed up chatting into the night again. Marie was working on a cute Fourth of July wreath for their door and Jake was up giving her a hard time about it. He really does like to tease. We eventually headed up and ended our fun day.

Wednesday July 1 - Morning comes early at Jake and Marie’s home. The kids skipped swim team and played on the sip and slide and launched water balloons in the backyard with my kids until 11:00. Those nine children (Will had preschool or it would have been ten) had a great morning out playing water games, and wrestling along the slip and slide. Carter said he was tired from Mr. Greg hanging off him all morning. Greg took a liking to Carter and was a little monkey all morning. There was also much swinging and a little drama over the mosquito larva in the home-made frog pond. So fun to watch the kids goof around and enjoy the sunshine and the company of their VA family. Tommy did great out with us in the yard for a bit and then needed a break so he went in for a bit of mind craft research on the computer. At some point he decided that locking us all out would be a wise decision so surprise. We were locked out but only for a few minutes. The smart boy opened the door before his Mom could get to upset. We had cookie sand chocolate milkshakes for a snack. Huge hugs and kisses all around and off we went on another days adventure.
Marie gave me some good tips on things to see in historic Leesburg so we drove into town. Unfortunately the houses were closed on Wednesdays so we just got to check out the outsides. We cruised around Leesburg as best as we could and my cell mapping devices on my phone quit working. Yikes! Not good. I did manage to get us back to route 7 and into Reston okay.
We did the old neighborhood tour. Saw the old elementary school, the park in the middle, shaky bridge park, the old pool on the corner where Carter met Jenny.
Knocked on a few doors and chatted with Barbara DeGoey, Michelle Miller and her boys Aaron and Timmy, Elizabeth Metcalf-Miller and her kid Caroline and Nathan, (Aaron was at his cousins), Knocked on Julie Koffed’s door and gave her the surprise of her life she says. We played in the back yard with Jenny and Banjo. Julie and I caught up while the kids played on their giant tree. The boys were up it in no time and had a fun adventure. Rope swing and all. Nobody fell our and died so it was a great visit. Jenny is a doll and just so cute. Carter said it wasn’t to awkward hanging out with his first girlfriend. They really were quite inseparable when they were little five year olds heading off to kindergarten with Ms. Kim. Such fun memories. We went down to the creek where Carter cracked his head open and Ally caught a ginormous frog. She was thrilled. It hopped off much to soon but the delight was still had by all. After our grand neighborhood adventure we headed to Hollie’s house for a few nights.
Unfortunately for me the map app on my phone continued to not work. I was very frustrated and tried to figure out an easy way to get to Reston from Hollie’s house. Knowing I was going to be late since it took me an hour and a half to get to Alexandria from Reston I headed off hoping the freeway would be better than the Route 7 option I took earlier. Of course I ended up getting on the freeway heading in the wrong direction and spent a considerable amount of time in rush hour traffic trying to get off and back on again going in the correct direction, which is West, by the way. Don’t ask me why my brain couldn’t figure that out in a split second as the freeway was splitting. You'd think I could at least remember that much. So left the kids with Nana, Hollie and Jozsef and once i located my ladies we had a grand time. They are all discussing their kids heading of to college and the recent high school graduation. I can’t believe how things have changed in nine years. We ate at a place called Vapiano’s, maybe or something close to that. It was in the Reston Town Center. I have missed my girls so much and it seems like absolutely no time has passed but somehow nearly ten years have melted away. Time is a wonder to me.

Driving home seemed compared to my nightmare ride there easy and not nearly as overwhelming. I managed to get myself back to Hollie’s house. The guys at the apple store, I stopped in right after eating said it was an At&t satellite problem and they couldn’t fix it for me. First time the geniuses have failed me. I cried inside and hurried on my way. Wish the kids were all tucked into bed when I got home but alas we had to heard children in to their stalls for the night. Ally is happily sleeping on the floor in Sadie’s room. Sadie is bunked up with Nana on the bottom, Sadie up top. It is a fun girls sleepover in that room! Jozsie wins his own room as he is the stubborn two year old and must not be disturbed in his sleep. We are all in agreement on this. This afternoon he was stomping around scaring Ally while he was acting like a dinosaur and growling. When she growled back it was him who was really quite scared, for real, and Ally had to smile at him to let him know she was only kidding. Quick recovery. He also stuck his head in-between the railings above the stairs today and gave us quite a fright. Himself included! We were able to squish his ears in and get him gently retrieved from his prison. Hollie said he does this about once a month. He was really quite upset and needed reassuring from his Mama before he was fully recovered. Kids are hard to round up and get to sleep when they are watching Star Ward until eleven o’clock at night. The TV was about thirty decibels louder than I thought necessary but the kids had enjoyed a fun night watching their movie and eating dinner with the cousins and Nana. I was emotionally and physically exhausted and couldn’t have lasted another minute by the time we got all tucked in and I retired.

Fourth of July Parade...we managed to get the scooters all decked out and the kids all decked out. Time for the parade!! Quick before the rain hits.
 Love the cowboy boots!
There is little time but the scavenger hunt was ready to go. The kids had fun following Nana's clues and finding their prizes. What a great Nana!!!

Friday, July 3 - Started the day off healthy with Jozsef, Sadie and Carter doing a donut run for breakfast. Sweet treats and tall glass of milk was perfect. We cut them all up into four pieces so we could try more than one flavor. Genius idea whoever was in charge of that. Kids wanted to bum around all day and play Rock Band but I insisted we go to Mt Vernon and learn more about George Wasihngton. Sadie agreed to come and finally got Ally to agree to come along as well. I messed up though as I had earlier dug out a ukulele chart from my wallet to give to Jozsef and left my wallet not in my purse. We got to Mt. Vernon and Hollie was a genius and bought us tickets online with my credit card. We were able to get in without my wallet. We had a one o'clock tour of the house so we explored the grounds. Washington’s grave had a special ceremony while we were there and we goto to watch a family place a memorial wreath inside the tomb and we all stood and said the Pledge of Allegiance together. Not gonna lie, teared up a bit. Then the museum speaker read a prayer for the nation George Washington had said years ago.  Everyone was reverent and it was a real special moment.
Made our way down the nature trail to the harbor and watched the cruise ship unload. The restroom was a welcome sight near the farm and wheat thrasher barn. The kids had fun picking the wheat out of the stalk and munching it up in their teeth. The bus was full which would have whisked us back to the top of the property so we just walked up the nature trail. The cheeto colored mushrooms made up for the walking. We were a few minutes early for our tour and they are serious about not having you go in a minute before your ticket time so we walked through the flower garden and greenhouse side of the property. The gift shop was spotted and there was hardly any thinking about anything after that for Sadie. I told her I wanted to give her lots of time to look around in the gift shop so we had to wait until after out tour before going in. This held her off well.
A museum tour guide was chatting with us before we entered the house. James told us he had met lots of people from Salt Lake earlier in the week when the Mormon Tab Choir had come through town. Then he told me of the most memorable experience of his life was when the choir sang with the National Symphony for the inauguration of Reagan Reagan. He had been standing next to Ms. Reagan as her body guard and the choir was signing patriotic songs right behind him. He said it was so powerful and he has loved the choir since. I was delighted to get to tell him my mom had been there on that cold January morning and has shared how special that moment was for her many times as well.
We learned a lot about the Washington’s house and hosting patterns of the time. You could stay as a guest for a few months if you wanted and they were required by social custom to let you stay until you wished to leave. They had frequent and often visitors and Washington felt his house was more of a hotel than a home. They did have help caring for their guests by their slaves. The colors of the walls in his home are boisterous but that speaks to the time period. I was impressed with the wood working and the ceiling designs. Gorgeous inside and out but the most breathtaking point is the view out over the river. The mist just hangs on the air and today it felt like rain would start any moment yet never did. On our tour between the servant house and the main house we walked across a little bridge of sorts. Sadie spotted a little black snake poking its head out of a hold we were all walking above. While disconcerting to me it was the least bit worrisome to the workers at Mt. Vernon. Apparently snakes are common on and around the grounds. Maybe I won’t be moving in anytime soon.
The gift shop did not disappoint. Said found a key to the bastille she wanted to bring home with her, Ally found the liberty bell and Tyler picked out a puzzle. I found a fife, we will see if I can learn to play it or not. First attempt tonight was well, not so successful. Luckily the lady at the gift shop bought my story about leaving my wallet at home. I had written down my credit card number earlier when I was on the line with Hollie and she just typed that baby into her computer and it allowed us to take home our treasures. Glad I look trustworthy.
I thoroughly enjoyed driving up the tree lined highway back towards Hollie’s. Lots of snacking occurred on the drive home as I didn’t want to explain to the food guy I had left my wallet at home and could he type in my code as well. Driving home wasn’t bad- I did miss a turnoff onto Yale Ave but was successfully rerouted by my app and we made it home. I am always so grateful when we get to where we were intending to go. Everyone was starving even with all the snacking so we had a quick bean salad and shredded pork lunch at 3:00 in the afternoon. The fermented watermelon went along nicely with the meal.
A few more Beatles tunes on rock band and swimsuits were in order. The pool is about three doors away and perfectly sized for our little group. The cousins had a splendid time enjoyed the frigid water in the not so hot air. We have been lucky with the overcast weather this week. Best fourth of July week in DC maybe ever.

Driving down George Washington highway on my way to Mt. Vernon I had poetry floating through my brain. The gorgeous trees and misty air brought on prose worthy of Keaton. Driving and writing don’t work well but I tried hard to remember them this evening as I journaled. I’m afraid my words don’t do justice to the moment.

moist and misty sliceable atmosphere
tall green arms leaning and arching to protect us
rocking on the porch with my ghost father

(My father and I sat on the back porch of Mt. Vernon while Carter nursed years ago. We chatted for nearly an hour. The view off the porch is an incredible scene with such greenery and the Potomac River floating lazily by.  The vision of this came rushing to my head as I was driving to Mt. Vernon today. It was such a sweet memory I nearly lost it and started crying.I was highly disappointed when I got to the back porch and they had replaced all the rockers with a row of screwed down standard chairs. There goes another memory.)

Saturday July 4 -   Parade with bikes and scooters around the pond/pool area in Hollie’s neighborhood. Cute Walker hung out with me while Hollie marched the parade and took photos. Jozsef’s speaker brought a festive air of music to the parade. packing, Laura’s scavenger hunt, hugs and kisses, parting with those we love, Potbelly’s, gift shops, airplanes, Orlando, cold pizza, crying babies, home=Byron.
