Usually at our house it is the boys who are doing the bird hunting. Tonight Ali decided she wanted to catch herself a hummingbird. She crafted the bird catching net you can see made out of bamboo sticks taped together and a wash cloth taped to the bamboo. It was working pretty well. She would hike beside our deck behind the dog bed and leap out at the poor hummingbirds as they came to take a sip of the sweet sugar water Byron puts out for them. After a while she got frustrated and I told her a story about how her Dad tried to catch birds one night as well. Pigeons though. He made a bird net out of a fishing net and we went to the freeway underpass and he tried to snag himself a few pigeons to use in training Jessie, the bird dog. We were laughing over this little story when Ali asked where his bird net was. She ran to the garage and upgraded her arsenal. You can see Byrons bird catching net in the top photo. While all this bird catching is going on our cat Lucy decided she didn't want to miss out and she climbed up in the tree and was staking out the bird feeder that I put out for the birds. It was the funniest thing to watch Lucy in the tree and the birds were going crazy diving at her and trying to convince her to get out of their way. Luckily none of our bird hunters were successful. We convinced Lucy to come out of the tree and while Ali got really close a few times she never did net a hummer. Phew! Birds beware!
