The Pinewood Derby- Sterling Heights Ward Style

Byron and the boys building their cars. They were up LATE last night finishing up all the final details.
Introducing the Jelly Bean Camper....pinewood derby style. Byron's entry to the derby this year was a hit. It pops up and down and yes does contain real jelly beans. All the kids cheered on the jelly bean camper. It would have come in second but Byron pulled out of the final heat so a cub scout could have a chance at a win.

Carter spent an evening working on his batmobile. He was proud of it but a bit too proud. He wanted the weights to be recessed into the bottom of the car. He spent an hour using the dremel saw getting the recessed hole just right. In the process he chipped a wheel and pretty much messed up his car. It did not come in dead last but close. He had fun racing though.

Tyler's beauty here made it to the final heat. He had a good run and fought hard and in the end it came in fourth place. Nice work Tyler. He carved this puppy by hand and sanded it all down himself. Anytime I would pick up a tool to help him he would ask if he could do it now. The kid wanted to do it by himself and he did a great job.

Tyler and his scout friends. Everyone was trying to point to their own car.

There they are. A boy and his derby car.

Let the races begin.

This is the final heat. Top four contestants and you can see the tension.

Fourth Place for his awesome car. Great work Tyler.

The derby cars of 2013. Way to go Pollan's. My favorite was the jelly bean camper. It's just so cute and full of candy.
